I love to find unique gifts. Etsy is a perennial favorite and our home is full of hand crafted items. Art, jewelry, apparel, you name it. We’ve bought them as gifts for almost any occasion and treated ourselves too. I was fortunate in the past couple of months to order 2 unique and custom pieces of jewelry for myself. A 3 stacked beaded bracelet set and a longed for skull ring. Purely by serendipity I found both artists through Instagram friends. I am learning Instagram can be a cool place to uncover ideas for gifts and most people are happy to share where they find items. I wanted to dispel negative energy and situations around me while strengthening myself too. Bracelets…
Atlanta’s Rhodes Family Bakery has been serving incredible baked goods since 1930. The founder of the bakery Magdaline Rhodes, an Atlanta native, began baking and selling desserts out of her home after the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the advent of the Great Depression. Our family loves their cakes (and cheese straws) and each one of us looks forward to our birthday cakes. We talk about designs we’ve thought of at least a month out! My husband and I have spent the past 8 years keeping our birthday decorating ideas for each other a surprise, and Rhodes has never let us down. This post contains affiliate links. The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum in Baltimore is offering live virtual tours. I am a sustaining member of the Edgar Allan Poe Society, and once I saw this in their newsletter, I jumped at the chance to book one! Although I have been to the Richmond museum twice, I have never had the chance to go to the Baltimore, Maryland one. It’s definitely a trip on my list to see where he lived from 1833 – 1835, wrote, and fell in love. You can book a public or private group tour. I cannot wait for mine and hope you support their mission too by reserving your spot today. All proceeds benefit the museum. New! And now expanding to the general public. Frank Lebby Stanton or F. L. Stanton was an American Lyrist born on February 22, 1857 in Atlanta, GA. He was the first professional columnist for the Atlanta Constitution and the first poet laureate for the state of Georgia. Mr. Stanton was often called “the James Whitcomb Riley of the South”; The two writers were close friends who frequently traded poetic ideas. Stanton frequently wrote in the dialect of black southerners and poor whites, although he was an opponent of the less-admirable aspects of the culture in which he lived (such as lynching), and he tended to be compatible in philosophy with the southern progressivism of his employer, the Atlanta Constitution, where he was an editorial writer. Two of the best ways you can social distance today are hiking and walking. Jack, Tom, and I have been exploring new trails and revisiting favorite ones. The wildlife has been plentiful and exciting to watch. I love the smell of trees and flowers in the woods and parks. The number of other walkers varies on the trails, and I’ll note what we experienced out and about. Lake AvondaleAvondale Estates NeighborhoodIt’s an easy walk around the lake with a paved trail. You can wander to parts along the lake to peer into the water or stand and take pictures off the trail. We always see turtles, ducks, and geese. Early May we had a good time when we went before lunch. Less walkers and people were conscientious about distance between guests. The lake is well marked with directional signs to keep everyone moving in the same direction and reminders to…
Restaurants are finding creative, sometimes extraordinary ways to continue serving diners during this world-wide pandemic while still staying afloat. Mediamatic ETEN is a vegan restaurant located in a greenhouse alongside an Amsterdam river. They are trying out a unique concept and waiting on permission from the government to hopefully continue it until it’s safe to reopen the full space. Diners sit outside in tiny waterfront greenhouses and staff serve their meals on a long plank thus allowing for social distancing. Looks like a clever way to dine and in a scenic spot. We found out about this new dining idea through Secret LA in an article by Ashlyn Davis. Everyone at some point has inevitably taken a pair of shears and clipped a tiny bit of hair off. Trim a bang, tame a cowlick, or cut that one tiny hair that won’t lay down despite every hair product in the world. Self haircuts are popping up all over social media. What can you do when a pandemic takes over the world and you’re sheltering in place? No hair salon or barber. Do it at home. We had two at home haircuts in this family, however I am only allowed to show you one. Jack, our 15 year old, refuses to show his images. Hate it too because it was the first one I ever did as a mom. But, I get to keep the pictures for myself so that’s what counts the most. He likes his cut just being a teen and not wanting those shots out there! Here…
Came downstairs today to a wonderful Mother’s Day surprise. The boys surprised me with tulips and a charcuterie board? Not an item I expected yet really enjoyed. I love surprises – the good kind. John, my husband, ordered it from a new company in Atlanta called The Charcuterie Chick. Alex Plavin creates custom charcuterie and cheese boards with seasonal ingredients. [envira-gallery id=’3842′] I love pink. The board and crackers came wrapped very nicely in pink tissue paper and pink and white colored boxes tied with ribbons. Perfect for me. It was a pretty display with the tulips and wine. My favorite wine by the way is Dr. L Riesling. So, at 2:00, we broke it open and paired it with everything on the board. John and I did – not the under aged teens in the house. Highly recommend for a personal treat or to entertain your guests. Welcome The…
Movies take our minds off things when we want an escape, and especially now with coronavirus in the world. Ran across an article recently 8 Movies to Watch on Netflix if You Want to Travel from Your Couch that had good suggestions for what to watch with your popcorn and snacks. I picked 2 that I thought looked interesting, and I’m adding 3 of my own you might enjoy.
