I love Queen Elizabeth the Second. Below is her rousing speech to Britain and the Commonwealth nations. Her first speech was in 1940 with her sister about the need for children to be evacuated to the countryside during time of war. Who knew she’d be making an address to the nation such as this 80 years later at the age of 93? https://youtu.be/FJP95WKJQjg

We all have our favorite things. I am a big fan of Poe, Alice in Wonderland, Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, Queen Elizabeth I, and history itself. In fact, this blog could well have been named with a combination of Poe-Alice-Austen since those are my TOP loves. I’m happy to say I’ve found an Etsy artist who satisfies all of these works of fiction and real characters. Tiffini Elektra X has a fabulous (I don’t throw that word around often) shop: Tartx . I have ordered 3 rings from here and they are some of my favorite jewelry. An Edgar Allan Poe ring, Alice and her crown, and I special ordered one of Jane Austen. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a renowned poet and educator of the 19th century. He achieved the highest level of literary success both in the United States and internationally. Longfellow, a Harvard professor, was the son of a Harvard graduate and attorney and the grandson on his maternal side of General Peleg Wadsworth (American Revolution). The most famous of his works are: The Landlord’s Tale – Paul RevereListen, my children, and you shall hearOf the midnight ride of Paul Revere… Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie A Psalm of Life The Song of Hiawatha Interestingly, Edgar Allan Poe was a big critic of his work in what became known as the “Little Longfellow War” in 1845. I’ll post a copy of an article detailing it from the Poe Museum soon. I started this post because I found this Longfellow poem and really liked it. Hope you enjoy reading it. Each heart has its haunted chamber, Where the silent moonlight falls! On the floor are mysterious footsteps, There are whispers along the walls! And mine at times is haunted By phantoms of the PastAs motionless as shadows By the silent moonlight cast. A form sits by the window, That is not seen by day,For as soon as the dawn approaches It vanishes away. It sits there in the moonlight Itself as pale and still,And points with its airy finger Across the window-sill. Without before the window, There stands a gloomy pine,Whose boughs wave upward and downward As wave these thoughts of mine. And underneath its branches Is the grave of a little child,Who died upon life’s threshold, And never wept nor smiled. What are ye, O pallid phantoms! That haunt my troubled brain? That vanish when day approaches, And at night return again? What are ye, O pallid phantoms! But the statues without breath,That stand on the bridge overarching The silent river of death? Henry Wadsworth…

The Japanese word describes piling up books to save for later … even if you’ll never actually read them. “Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity.” – A. Edward Newton, author, publisher, and collector of 10,000 books. Are you one of us? A master of tsundoku? Mine takes the shape of the aspirational stack by my bedside table – because I am going to read every night before bed, of course, and upon waking on the weekends. Hahaha. My tsundoku also takes shape in cookbooks … even though I rarely cook from recipes. And I think I most fervently practice tsundoku when I buy three or four novels to pile in my suitcase for a five-day vacation. Sometimes not even one sees its spine…

I love Etsy and most everything I’ve ever purchased has been what I was looking for and I was pleased with the items. Good customer service – the kind you can just feel – is consistent on Etsy. Can’t take it for granted nowadays. I received two Christmas gifts this past year which are favorites. One shop I was new to and one I have used before and will again. Found this by literally keying in Poe and cats to see if there might be a shirt out there. Thanks, theantiantishop! I’ll keep my eye on what you roll out. Love this shirt!! Poe and cats? What’s not to love! theantiantishop The quality and fit of the shirt is good and excited to be wearing it. Tartx I adore my Alice in Wonderland ring from Tartx. I periodically check in on her shop to see what’s new. You can find…

It was my birthday yesterday and while I was out running an errand I had a funny thought. I never go in Whole Foods. Don’t have the budget and I could stay for hours looking at things and don’t have those hours to spare. But, as I was shopping for one thing, a scenario popped in my head about what would I buy if I had an American Express black card and I could hit up Whole Foods< I cannot imagine how much that total would be. Let alone the fact I do not have the space in my house to hold everything I’d buy. Tried to buy cashews and there’s 8+ choices. I just wanted cashews. The tea aisle is a dream for tea connoisseurs. Don’t get me started on all of the natural lotions and organic home products. I could lotion ingredients for days. Cypress Grove Lamb Chopper…
