In my second of three posts about Reverend Howard Finster I’ll talk about his work and show what I photographed on my visit to his museum and gallery. The first post was about the cozy Air BnB I stayed in across the street from his museum and garden in Summerville, Georgia. Our timing for writing about this artist is the upcoming festival know as “Finster Fest” that will be held in a few weeks. Howard Finster was a self-taught or outsider artist. Outsider artists are typically those that have no art training and exist outside the mainstream art world. Fantasy, unconventional ideas, and at times extreme mental stress can be found in their art. In his case, he started with an outsider’s viewpoint and moved into sacred art later in life. Self-portrait Paradise Garden Museum Finster was born in rural Alabama in 1961. At the age of 3, he saw…

A Dream BY EDGAR ALLAN POE In visions of the dark nightI have dreamed of joy departed—But a waking dream of life and lightHath left me broken-hearted. Ah! what is not a dream by dayTo him whose eyes are castOn things around him with a rayTurned back upon the past? That holy dream—that holy dream,While all the world were chiding,Hath cheered me as a lovely beamA lonely spirit guiding. What though that light, thro’ storm and night,So trembled from afar—What could there be more purely brightIn Truth’s day-star? Source: PoetryFoundation.org

Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham is a series on the Starz channel that features actors – Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish – from the show Outlander. For those that don’t know, Outlander tells the story of two lovers, their adventures in history, and time travel. Yes, based on the Diana Gabaldon novel it involves time travel. Scotland is a major player in the novel and tv show and this road trip series is about these actors exploring Scotland and all its traditions. It came out in March, I recorded it, and am only now watching it. You can probably find it on demand or online. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. This post contains affiliate links. Recently, my friends came through when I asked them about their favorite podcasts. I have only been into podcasts for the past year. Didn’t care for them at first, but now I regularly listen to a few. I received so many recommendations that I am breaking them down into a series of posts. Good problem to have, huh? So, I’ll break the list up to avoid a never-ending single post. The categories are Trashy Fun, Comedy, Murder and True Crime, Spooky and Supernatural, Racial Injustice, History, Book Reviewers, Film, and Dolly Parton’s America. Connie LaGoy is a Korean American self-taught artist, writer, collector, and owner of Plein de Bonte Studios. She lives in Atlanta, and she first caught our attention when we interviewed the owner of an artist collective and saw her work displayed. Citizen Exchange founder, Amy Barker, saw an original painting of Connie’s that she’d done to raise money to support victims of a horrific crime in the city. Her sorrow and compassion for the families drove her to create her piece “Final Journey”. Limited prints were sold and 100% of the proceeds went to the families. We asked her about this meaningful piece and about her beautiful work. This post contains affiliate links. Bring joy to your home with your art. Walking into someone’s home is a treat. I enjoy seeing how they display their interests and passions through their décor, and especially items around the house that show who they are. Portraits of their families and friends, paintings they curate, sayings they’ve hung around the kitchen or house – a window to silently tell you things about your friends. My house is full of random, eclectic items that are hung carefully to be in harmony despite their different genres. Jennifer Graham Photography I collect paintings from local Atlanta artists like R. Land. I have 2 of his pieces, Lost Cat and Speckles. My favorite artist is George Rodrigue from Louisiana. I am fortunate to have one of his screen paintings in my den where it is prominently displayed. He created it on September 11, 2001, to immediately raise funds for the victims…
