As part of my birthday this year, we traveled to an amazing VRBO home in Sky Valley, Georgia. Big fans and frequent visitors of the north Georgia mountains we hadn't been to this particular corner. Sky Valley is the highest city in the state and borders North Carolina. I took pictures of the scenic overlook on the way to the house and the overlook was 3,100+ feet! We drove up a road leading to a higher elevation to reach our destination. Whoosh!
Stunning mountain getaway as words that accurately describe the property we rented. We were thrilled. I cannot imagine not living there year round if I was fortunate enough to own it. It's quiet and serene and gorgeous where the home is located. And, you can drive to restaurants and stores within 20 minutes in Dillard or skip over to North Carolina.
I have always said that, if I ever achieve my dream of a mountain house, I will go nuts with signs. And bears and moose decor.
The home consists of two floors and one entire side consists of sliding glass doors and windows. Two decks with seating areas including outdoor candles. I did not snap a shot of the outdoor dining table. My husband set up his laptop and worked in the fresh mountain air. Work is never done, huh?
There were three bedrooms, including a master suite on the top floor and the fourth bedroom downstairs. Plenty of dining space, kitchen, and nice den upstairs. We didn't spend a lot of time in the den and you'll find out why in a moment.
My middle son is a huge film fanatic. A lover of classics, directors, genres, and films I have never heard of yet learn more about every day. He was the main inspiration for ultimately renting this home despite it being my birthday. I wanted to see the joy on his face when he saw what laid in store. Traveling to the lower floor now…
A fabulous home theatre! Not only that it had a full bar area, game room complete with pool/foosball tables, poker setup, and board games.
After exploring the house, playing pool, and settling in we drove to nearby Dillard to pick up dinner. Enjoyed it inside at the upstairs table since it grew chilly. Cleared everything up and headed outside to roast marshmallows. The funniest part of the trip was the absolute stubbornness of the fire to stay lit. We brought our own firewood (you need to bring it yourselves) and starter blocks. It was wet up there since there'd been rain but the inside of the pit was dry since it was covered. We got it going for about twenty minutes maybe thirty until the wind decided it was not going to happen. We did however roast about five marshmallows each. Had to set them aflame to cook them as the wind didn't allow you time to properly toast them. But, if you've ever had a nice, charred marshmallow with a gooey inside you know it's good. The owners had provided extra-long wooden sticks for us and that was a nice touch.
It's an understatement to say that a moonlit night on a mountain is gorgeous. A view I never get tired of seeing.
We wrapped up the night by lounging in the downstairs theatre watching “Rebecca” – 1940's original Alfred Hitchcock version. They do not make them like Sir Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine anymore.

We had an awesome trip to Sky Valley and Rabun county. Already planning to reserve this home again for a future family visit – a longer one.
