In honor of National Cat Day on October 29, 2021, we thought we’d feature black cats and their history in popular media. It’s one of our final Halloween posts of the year too. Our family has had the joy of 3 black kitties as family members. Raven, Thursday, and Binx Graham. This post contains affiliate links. If you click a link and make a purchase, Poe in Wonderland will earn a small commission for the referral at no cost to you. All opinions are my own and I only recommend products and services I think will add value to my readers. Read more about affiliates and disclaimers here. Raven Graham Thursday Graham Binx Graham We volunteered at Furkids Animal Shelter for 11 years. It’s the largest cat shelter in the southeast. Black cats remain the least adoptable ones since superstitions still abound about them. Ours have all been wonderful with…

Part of the joy of being a blogger is spending time in coffee houses working. I recently visited a cafe in Lawrenceville, Georgia that has a relaxing vibe and cats. Yes, 4 cats live in the cafe and you can pet them and hang out. The Catfe is located in an older, beautifully decorated house – a little oasis in itself. This post contains affiliate banner links. This is a sponsored post on behalf of KittyNook. I received the product in exchange for this review but all opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way. KittyNook is an online pet store for cats with toys, harnesses, walking leashes, bowls, beds, and more. Their website blog offers posts about International Cat Day, cat health, safety, and ways you can play with and enrich their lives. We have two cat rescues here at Poe in Wonderland – Zazzles (tortoiseshell) and Binx (jet black). I and all three of my sons volunteered for 11 years with one of the southeast’s largest pet organizations Furkids. To say we like cats is an understatement. Recently, we saw a spooky Halloween shirt with a black cat and a smart robot-like cat laser toy we had to try. Zazzles and Binx First, we’ll show you the unboxing of the Invigorating Cat…

Imagine walking in an alleyway in Shanghai where people are passing, windows are full of residents going about everyday chores, and shops are busy when you hear a “Miaow”. You can’t locate its source anywhere until you finally look upwards to see a cat perched atop a fruit shop. Marcel Heijnen, a Dutch photographer, experienced this very thing last fall and took the stealthy kitty’s photo. It’s now included in his latest book Spot the Shop Cat that came out this month. Along with Australian illustrator Stephen Case, the duo tells the tale of Spot, a cartoon cat who lives in a dried goods shop. Been very happy with the 2 cat products we’ve purchased over the past year. We have rescue cats and like to try different things to enrich their lives. This post may contain affiliate links and we may earn compensation when you click on the links at no additional cost to you. They were making a mess with their old drinking fountain – hair and food – and it was hard to refill with fresh water. Saw the Catit Flower Water Fountain on a friend’s Facebook page, read the reviews, watched the video of it in action, and ordered it. You can buy filters for it that keep the water clean and they are easy to keep flushed from any debris. There are a variety of ways to run the water through the fountain. You can set it to run on 3 different settings: Ours flows like a brook but you…

One thing I was delighted to find out when I first visited the Poe Museum in Richmond was the fact that 2 black cats live there. They were born right behind the Poe bust in the shrine. How perfect is that scenario? The mama and siblings have long gone to homes, but Edgar and Pluto live at the museum and greet visitors daily in the shop or in the Enchanted Garden. I have not been lucky enough to meet them but really hope to one day. Edgar Allan Poe had a beloved tortoiseshell cat named Catterina. Our family loves cats, and I love Poe so kismet. https://youtu.be/MnP1lO38t1g Photo Credits: Chris Semtner and the Poe Museum From the Poe Museum Website: “In honor of Poe’s love of cats, the Poe Museum cares for two delightful black felines named Edgar and Pluto—the latter named after the cat in Poe’s story “The Black…

We are going through a dark, world-wide pandemic with COVID19. It isn’t the first one the world has been through one, and unfortunately, it won’t be the last. According to the CDC, the Spanish Flu of 1918 was the most devastating. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States. Source: CDC People in 1918 looked for solutions to the prevention of spreading the illness and germs too. They got creative based on what they believed. We’re seeing a similar pattern 102 years later. Atlas Obscura and the Daily Mail both feature an article on this reoccurence. We’re posting the one from Atlas Obscura in a follow-up to our earlier one about their new WFH series. Parents Put Masks…

Pounce Cat Cafe was started by 2 best friends who wanted to save cats from the streets and do it in style as a place for both cats and humans to mingle and fall in love. Pounce Cat Cafe + Wine Bar is a great place to visit with 2 locations: Charleston and Savannah. Rescue cats live at their locations and you can visit and enjoy a beverage while picking out a new bestie or simply socialize and have fun. The boys and I had a really nice time last year on spring break at their Charleston spot. They are struggling like all small businesses. One of the ways you can support them is to order merchandise, if not for you, for your kiddos or to cheer someone up during these dark days. Personally, I like the wine coffee mug, cat ears, and sweet beanie. I just wish it got…

In honor of World Cat Day (August 8th), we’re sharing an unique spot we found not long ago. I was reminded of the American Museum of the House Cat by a Facebook post on Henry’s House Feral Community’s page. They’d posted a link to an article on the museum by Atlas Obscura. This post contains affiliate links. If you click a link and make a purchase, Poe in Wonderland will earn a small commission for the referral at no cost to you. Last fall Tom, Jack, and I headed to Asheville and Lake Lure for our school break. We enjoy taking our time and discovering places along our route to stop or note for future road trips. If you spend any time on our blog, you’ll quickly notice we love cats. We’ve volunteered at Furkids for over 11 years so long before the youngest son was born. About 45 minutes…
