Halloween is over so what do you do with your left over Jack-o-lanterns or pumpkins? Quite a lot of things. You can do what our family did in 2011 and host a pumpkin smash-a-thon. We invited friend over, spread a tarp, and beat the snot out of ours! It was fun, but let me tell you it’s not as easy as you think. I suppose you could rig up a giant slingshot like they did in that “Modern Family” episode. Not sure you could use a school’s football field or where you’d get the huge slingshot – more power to you if you do! [envira-gallery id=’5956′] We found some good post-Halloween ideas in: “10 Ways to Recycle Your Pumpkins After Halloween”. Collect the seeds, put them on a pan, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake in the oven. Use them as table decoration for Thanksgiving. I often…
Fall is the time of year we gather inside with friends and family to share food and drinks by a fire, a table, or while watching a football game. The holidays are fast approaching and swapping gossip or stories over drinks is a favorite past time. Fall is our favorite season in this house, and we’re excited about all of the fun things that come with it. Pumpkins and pumpkin bread make the season prettier and more flavorful. We recently found a recipe by Christina who writes A Homebody’s Adventures blog where she features what she enjoys about the comforts of home. Reading, cooking, baking, party planning inspiration, and more. We decided to try baking her pumpkin bread so Tom read to me while I baked. It’s an easy recipe and the ingredients – except for the puree – are probably in your pantry. It takes about 10 minutes to prep it and approximately 1 hour to cook. For us, it took me about 20 minutes to prep since Tom insisted on telling me all about particular parts of a book so I had to keep pausing to listen. Our oven baked it in 50 minutes.…
Cocktails are a major part of any night out or party. Halloween is the perfect time of year to try new ones. I am a vodka girl at heart, but I do love color and style in a good drink. I found 7 Halloween cocktails that are made of ingredients you probably have in your home or they’re easy to pick up whenever you’re out running errands. Most of these are from Delish.com. Parties will be hard to attend this year with the state the world is in, however it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy cocktails with family and friends via a good Zoom session or small-scale event, right? Or simply mix yourself one while you watch your favorite horror film. This post contains affiliate links. Atlanta’s Rhodes Family Bakery has been serving incredible baked goods since 1930. The founder of the bakery Magdaline Rhodes, an Atlanta native, began baking and selling desserts out of her home after the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the advent of the Great Depression. Our family loves their cakes (and cheese straws) and each one of us looks forward to our birthday cakes. We talk about designs we’ve thought of at least a month out! My husband and I have spent the past 8 years keeping our birthday decorating ideas for each other a surprise, and Rhodes has never let us down. This post contains affiliate links. Came downstairs today to a wonderful Mother’s Day surprise. The boys surprised me with tulips and a charcuterie board? Not an item I expected yet really enjoyed. I love surprises – the good kind. John, my husband, ordered it from a new company in Atlanta called The Charcuterie Chick. Alex Plavin creates custom charcuterie and cheese boards with seasonal ingredients. [envira-gallery id=’3842′] I love pink. The board and crackers came wrapped very nicely in pink tissue paper and pink and white colored boxes tied with ribbons. Perfect for me. It was a pretty display with the tulips and wine. My favorite wine by the way is Dr. L Riesling. So, at 2:00, we broke it open and paired it with everything on the board. John and I did – not the under aged teens in the house. Highly recommend for a personal treat or to entertain your guests. Welcome The…
Welcome to December. So far in Atlanta, Georgia it’s been a mixture of fall weather in the ’60’s to winter the past two days in the ’40’s. The south doesn’t always make its mind up about the weather! John and I were lucky enough to travel down to Charleston, South Carolina for one night in late November. The Lowcountry as it’s called is one of my favorite places. I am from South Carolina and it feels like home. We stayed on King Street about two blocks from the city market. Before I travel, I like to research restaurants for all of our meals. And, I don’t mean look up a few. I deep dive into cross referencing places. I went to TripAdvisor first and pulled up top…
the Queen of Creole CuisineThe New Orleans Advocate staff photo by Mark Becherer New Orleans, Louisiana, is one of the most fascinating places I’ve been to. I’m a fairly new visitor since I’ve only been going since 2000. Been on maybe a half dozen trips and mainly done tourist activities. I’ve read about it all my life. It helps if you have a love of ghost stories and history and get obsessed with architecture. You can find all of that there. And that’s without touching on the food. The food. Liz M., a friend of mine, who is from New Orleans recently shared this article on Facebook. Leah Chase sounds like an extraordinary human being. I wish I’d had the chance to meet her. She changed her life and the world around her and there are generations who will remember her and what she did. And in such simple, meaningful ways. Her work…
