I am a sustaining member of the Edgar Allan Poe Society, and once I saw this in their newsletter, I jumped at the chance to book one! Although I have been to the Richmond museum twice, I have never had the chance to go to the Baltimore, Maryland one. In January, I was very excited to attend the Poe Museum’s annual Poe Birthday Bash. I’d been in 2018 and couldn’t wait to go again. Flew into Richmond on the Friday night before the event to stay at the Berkeley Hotel in the Shockoe Slip business district. I like to stay there since it’s a 12 minute walk to the Poe Museum or a short Uber trip. (You can read my review on the Berkeley here). Friday night was a frigid, windy 36 degrees and walking to the restaurant 2 blocks away was unpleasant. Even sitting in the Irish pub’s window seat was cold! As I ate dinner, I was worried the flight, hotel, and travel was going to be for naught with the weather. However, the next morning it was a fine 37 to 39 degrees out – cloudy but not windy. My trip is booked and tickets purchased for one of the exciting events of the year – at least for Poe lovers. Every year the Poe Museum in Richmond throws a huge party for the poet’s birthday. People come from all over to attend. In the beginning, staff and volunteers hosted the party for 24 hours. Let that sink in for a second. The curator told me they would bring mattresses or bedding and sleep on the floor in some of the buildings awaiting visitors. But, in the wee hours no one was visiting so they changed to a 12 hour format. I made it 6 1/2 hours on my first try, however, I flew in for the day and night and didn’t arrive in the city in enough time to stay the full length of the event. Edgar Allan Poe’s Pocket Watch On June 12, 2019, Christie’s Auction House, in New York, sold Poe’s pocket watch (item 209). The final price was $250,000. The estimate was $80,000 – 120,000. The watch is described as “French. An 18K gold key-wound quarter repeating open-face pocket watch with metal guilloche dial Roman hour markers and spade hands. The cuvet (dust-cover) is engraved, “Enchappement A Cylindre En – Aiguilley – Edgar A. Poe – Pierre Huit Trous En Rubis.” The inside case-back cover is engraved with the case number 21705. The case is 51 mm.” The summary provenance states “Edgar A Poe, with engraved inscription – acquired by John W. Albright, merchant tailor of Philadelphia and one of Poe’s creditors c. 1840-1842 – given to his brother, H.A. Albright in 1845 and as follows: On H.A.
