My third and last post on traveling and staying at the Howard Finster Paradise Garden in Summerville, Georgia is about my night tour. I have tips on visiting and photographs of the awesome experience of being in an artist’s studio and seeing his work in the pitch dark. Definitely one for the books! In my second of three posts about Reverend Howard Finster I’ll talk about his work and show what I photographed on my visit to his museum and gallery. The first post was about the cozy Air BnB I stayed in across the street from his museum and garden in Summerville, Georgia. Our timing for writing about this artist is the upcoming festival know as “Finster Fest” that will be held in a few weeks. Howard Finster was a self-taught or outsider artist. Outsider artists are typically those that have no art training and exist outside the mainstream art world. Fantasy, unconventional ideas, and at times extreme mental stress can be found in their art. In his case, he started with an outsider’s viewpoint and moved into sacred art later in life. Self-portrait Paradise Garden Museum Finster was born in rural Alabama in 1961. At the age of 3, he saw…

Travel is a passion and one we would love to indulge in more. Currently, we are staying home with all of our school and work, but we long for the open road. I, for one, cannot wait until we can travel again in early fall. Thinking about the wildness of nature we thought of the American essayist, poet, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau. His quotes on nature resonate with us. “Life consists with wildness. The most alive is the wildest. Not yet subdued to man, its presence refreshes him. One who pressed forward incessantly and never rested from his labors, who grew fast and made infinite demands on life, would always find himself in a new country or wilderness, and surrounded by the raw material of life. He would be climbing over the prostrate stems of primitive forest trees.” “I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom…

Atlanta, GeorgianThe Georgian Terrace HotelOne of our favorite places to stay in Georgia. This modern classic hotel was built in 1911, and stands on a famous corner in Atlanta on Peachtree Street. Located across from the Fox Theatre, it’s seen a great deal of history in Midtown. A luxury hotel that regularly hosts weddings and important public events where you can stay in a fabulous suite with city views. They even allow for dogs and what luxury hotel does this? We try to stay at least once a year, especially at Christmas with its beautifully decorated lobby. A partially abandoned building stood on a wide block of real estate on historic Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta for decades. It had been through numerous reincarnations. Vandalized and in major disrepair, it stood. I’d pass it several times a day going to work, and then later shopping or riding with my kiddos. I saw it as a hulking behemoth with an Atlanta police station and lots of broken windows next to what was known as the “Murder Kroger” for reasons evident in its name. Only a few not a lot, but I digress. Development came along “Ponce”, and Ponce City Market was born. Even after celebrating my 50th birthday on the rooftop at the market, I still cannot believe it’s there born out of the messy place that it was. This post contains affiliate links. Goats on the Roof in Tiger, Georgia, is fun for all ages. Travel north outside Atlanta towards the mountains, and you’ll happen upon GOTR on your left. Can’t miss goats standing on roofs! We first read about it years ago in a parenting magazine but never went. This post contains affiliate links. You’ll also pass the bus graveyard on your way to the goat attraction. It’s a big collection of abandoned buses that have now been artistically decorated and adorned. But, we digress. The goats venue sits on a corner on the way into the town of Tiger. You pull into a gravel parking lot and you can clearly see all the goats mulling about…
Charleston in the spring is glory to behold. Flowers are blooming, the weather is warm, dining outdoors is heaven at night, and you get to experience the lowcountry at its best. We took a family trip the first weekend in May. It was a mixed bag of good and bad experiences, but wouldn’t trade it for anything. This post contains affiliate links. We’ve been visiting Charleston for over 33 years and the majority of those visits have been wonderful, however, the start of this particular trip was a disaster. I never post negative things because that isn’t what this blog is about, but sometimes it’s necessary. I reserved our stay in plenty of time. We arrived…
Tour the historic Edgar Allan Poe Bronx cottage from the safety and comfort of your home. Could be for you or family and friends. The Bronx Historical Society was kind enough to reach out to us to ask if we’d post and invite people. It’s a given we’re doing it! Comment or poewonderland@gmail.com me for details. Thanks! I took the Tell-Tale Heart Richmond tour today that we talked about earlier this week. It was a livestream event created via a partnership between the Poe Museum and Heygo.com. I’d never used Heygo and have to say I may be hooked if their other tours are as entertaining. I signed up for this particular event because it was about places around Richmond to visit that were there in Poe’s day. Dean Knight, Programs Coordinator at the museum and a theatre actor, did an excellent job. He’s also a tour guide in the city so fun to listen to since he entertains you with facts and recites poetry. Can’t go wrong with that combination! You still have time to take the Tell-Tale Heart tour on Thursday, April 22nd, at 3 PM EST. Highly recommend it! Heygo connects people from around the world through tours where they can log into their…
