Meet Jennifer Graham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Graham.

So, before we jump into specific questions about your business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I live in Atlanta, specifically Lilburn, with my husband, 3 sons, and 2 rescue cats. I didn’t grow up a small-town girl. I always wanted to live in a small town and now I do. We enjoy exploring where we live, greater Atlanta, and places nearby. I enjoy shopping and going to events and especially take pleasure in sharing what I like about these things. I started a new lifestyle and travel blog in June called PoeinWonderland.com. I had been sharing things I found for years with friends, family, and strangers so I decided to go for it and start a blog.

Why call my blog Poe in Wonderland? I love the light and the dark, serious and absurd, and dichotomies I enjoy eclectic things. Jane Austen, Neil Gaiman, and JK Rowling, folk art and Van Gogh, artistic expression, Poe and Wonderland. Dichotomies and eclecticism are my specialties. I married a conservative looking accountant who turned out to own an indie music label and is a die-hard Monty Python and Who fan. I had to learn what shoe-gazing music was! I am a minimalist dresser yet have multi-colored hair and change it every six weeks. When you look at my arms from the front, you see unmarked skin but when I turn my arms over, you see tattoos. I’ve loved Edgar Allan Poe and Alice in Wonderland for most of my life. From the minute I discovered their existence. My mom used to read to me from an Alice book that I still have. It’s well worn and dated 1976 and is a precious possession. My house is decorated with Poe. There’s a bust of him, a gorgeous custom wreath made in a raven theme, candles, books, and photographs of my visits to Poe events and museums. It’s a house you walk into perhaps expecting more traditional themes but find unexpected items. Skulls, first edition Wonderland books, folk art, graveyard photography.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I live to find things others don’t see or that are lesser-known and to shine a light on them. Writing about our visits and experiences with popular destinations yet also those that are hidden gems. Places you may not know exist, but would have a great time exploring. I enjoy highlighting people, books, and films too – ones everyone hears about and those independent random ones. Sharing lifestyle items that aren’t necessarily shoes, clothing, makeup. I love local stores, artists, galleries, festivals unique to their area, and shopping that may not be in a big box store. Don’t get me wrong, I do like those stores too, but share a special love for the smaller ones.

My ambition is to travel the world and find these things. Think Atlas Obscura. I’m writing and creating content to appeal to a broader audience but really see it as finding a niche for those who appreciate the mainstream yet like to fall down a rabbit hole too. The dichotomies and eclectic things in life.

I am most proud of the fact that I am actually putting my idea and dream in motion. After thinking about it forever, I am developing strategies to make it a reality.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The reactions of people who own businesses when they find out I want to write about them. Popular venues and small, unheard of ones. Everyone enjoys sharing what they do. I know writing about quirky, lesser-known places isn’t a strategy that may earn a lot of money, but it’s what I want to do. My family likes to go to these places and I want to share them,

The joy I see on peoples’ faces and their eagerness to show me what they do is worth it and that’s what I am proud of overall.
