Recently, my friends came through when I asked them about their favorite podcasts. I have only been into podcasts for the past year. Didn't care for them at first, but now I regularly listen to a few. I received so many recommendations that I am breaking them down into a series of posts. Good problem to have, huh? So, I’ll break the list up to avoid a never-ending single post. The categories are Trashy Fun, Comedy, Murder and True Crime, Supernatural and Bizarre, Racial Injustice, History, Book Reviewers, Film, and Dolly Parton’s America.

Podcast Definition

Simply put, a podcast is an audio programme, just like Talk Radio, but you subscribe to it on your smartphone and listen to it whenever you like. In a little more detail, a podcast is a series of spoken word, audio episodes, all focused on a particular topic or theme, like cycling or startups. You can subscribe to the show with an app on your phone and listen to episodes whenever you like on your headphones, in the car or through speakers.

Two of their recent episodes reviewed “The Prom” and this year's round-up of Christmas and holiday movies. I'd never heard of “The Prom” and now I want to see it on Netflix. Since I didn't know about it and missed it on Broadway, Netflix will have to do. Plus, I love Andrew Rannells from “Girls”! Spoiler Alert: NPR gave it mixed reviews. The original Broadway show earned 7 Tony nominations.

“The Prom and What’s Making Us Happy

Pop Culture's Happy Hour podcast calls their holiday movie reviews: The ‘Happiest Season,' With a ‘Dash' of Dolly And Gay – now that is a title. They promise “We're going to survey the tinsel-strewn landscape to bring you the brutal truth about some of this year's holiday offerings…” It's a 23-minute podcast you might want to listen to if you are into the latest holiday flicks. This year they are offering opinions on Happiest Season, Hallmark's A Christmas HouseDash & Lily, and Dolly Parton's Christmas On The Square.

Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me hosts: Peter Sagel and Bill Kurtis

I've listened to this show on many occasions in traffic and on trips. It's fun to listen to guests and the hosts bauble their way through the quizzes. The topics and questions are interesting and you likely won't get every single answer but that's the best part. You can laugh and learn. I love Sarah Paulson and they recently recorded an episode with her.

Everyone needs to laugh at least once a day. Certainly helps to get through life. One or all of these may just be what you need to give you a boost. I hope you at least smile if have a full-out laugh!
