Emily Dickinson was loving, kind, and a bit of a prankster. “Will there really be a morning” is a poem she wrote on the back of a cake recipe. A cake recipe?! What if it hadn’t been found? I learned about this while looking up the poem and ran across Hidden Kitchens produced by The Kitchen Sisters. Their series featured the story of Emily and the poem on NPR’s Morning Edition which we can listen to below. Ten good things I’ve experienced end of January and half of February are here. I was making an effort to post about five things every week, but I’ve fallen down on the job. Time to get back up. I’m hoping anyone reading my good things will record theirs either in a journal or post. We need happy things these days as we move forward in 2021. Photo Credit: Laurie Williamson (his mom) Spike Williamson is my buddy. Known him for at least 7 years or so. He’s feisty and will act like you’re meeting for the first time every time you see him outdoors. However, if you go into his house and sit on a sofa, he’s your best friend, especially if belly rubs are included. His mom, Laurie, and I walk once or twice a week. It’s kept us sane and active during this neverending pandemic. There are days…

Georgia Gilmore was not a name that I was familiar with when thinking of the Civil Rights movement. I stumbled into her story while following podcast links about secret kitchens. Searching for one topic invariably leads me to another that fascinates me. I discovered the Hidden Kitchens series and their presentation on Mrs. Gilmore’s significant contribution to the Civil Rights movement, specifically the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She was a creator of The Club from Nowhere – a group of women from Montgomery, Alabama, who baked pies, cookies, and cakes and sold them on street corners and through salons to raise money for the boycott. The name was chosen, so if questioned, members could honestly say the money came from “nowhere”. Her love of food and the connections it brought to people, along with her strong spirit, changed history. “You cannot be afraid if you want to accomplish anything. You got…

By Sylvia PlathOctober 4, 1958 Flintlike, her feet struck such a racket of echoes from the steely street, tacking in moon-blued crooks from the black stone-built town, that she heard the quick air ignite  its tinder and shake a firework of echoes from wall to wall of the dark, dwarfed cottages. But the echoes died at her back as the walls gave way to fields and the incessant seethe of grasses  riding in the full of the moon, manes to the wind, tireless, tied, as a moon-bound seamoves on its root. Though a mist-wraith wound up from the fissured valley and hung shoulder-high  ahead, it fattened to no family-featured ghost, nor did any word body with a namethe blank mood she walked in. Once past the dream-peopled village, her eyes entertained no dream,  and the sandman’s dust lost lustre under her footsoles. The long wind, paring her person downto a pinch of flame, blew its burdened whistle in the whorl of her ear, and, like a scooped-out…

The LakeEdgar Allan Poe – 1809-1849 In youth’s spring it was my lotTo haunt, of the wide earth a spotThe which I could not love the less,So lovely was the lonelinessOf a wild lake, with black rock bound,And the tall pines that tower’d around. But, when the night had thrown her pallUpon that spot, as upon all,And the mystic wind went byMurmuring in melody -Then – ah then I would awakeTo the terror of the lone lake. Yet that terror was not fright. But a tremulous delight – A feeling not the jewelled mineCould teach or bribe me to define -Nor Love – although the Love were thine. Death was in that poison’d wave —And, in its gulf, a fitting graveFor him who thence could solace bringTo his lone imagining -Whose solitary soul could makeAn Eden of that dim lake. https://youtu.be/3OKdS85iPo4 You might enjoy our post Evening Star Written by Edgar Allan…

I love creating centerpieces around my house. All over my house on end tables, coffee tables, and bookcases, you’ll find vignettes arranged with stacked books, candles and candle holders, pictures, key pieces. Vignettes can be arranged on any surface, however, a centerpiece is the focal point or center of a table. Creating centerpieces is one of my favorite hobbies. Holidays are the most fun. In an upcoming post, I’ll cover how to do these step by step along with tablescapes. Here’s my current Valentine’s Day design. I used a round metal and wood tray I searched high and low for and found at a local At Home store. I’d originally hunted it down for a Thanksgiving centerpiece but have since used it for Christmas and Valentine’s. St. Patrick’s Day will probably be next. Candle holders are my big love so I included 3 of varying sizes in different finishes for…
