Swooped into my local Homegoods store yesterday – in and out with social distancing all the way. I’m not affiliated with them, simply a Homegoods addict. Halloween items are trickling in, and as always, you need to hit up lots of their locations to discover everything because they seem to individually order for their own stores. They have diversified items this year with a mix of elegant, vintage-looking, and Disney inspired merchandise. Added lots of choices in Halloween pillows which is thrilling! I need more decorative pillows like a hole in the wall and I may have to start hiding them from my husband, John. So tempting the choices! [envira-gallery id=’5047′] Disney merchandise might have been in the stores in the past, but I hadn’t noticed it. Not a big Disney merch fan. I have friends who like it though so I did notice more items on this trip. [envira-gallery…

STANDS is once again teaming up with the cast and crew of Supernatural for a great cause. Samantha Smith, who plays Mary Winchester, on the show has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Supernatural’s stars regularly use show logos and characters in STANDS merchandise to support non-profits or the community. In the past, they’ve raised money for hunger, hurricane relief, pandemic support, and suicide awareness. As we approach October and breast cancer awareness month, this shirt can help raise funds towards this worthy cause. HURRY since this is the last week they are selling them! Photo Credit: STANDSBeautiful pink phoenix rising Supernatural is the longest running series on the CW network and has given us 15 amazing seasons. It is hands down my absolute favorite show. I’ve purchased quite a bit of their partner STANDS merchandise over the years and been really pleased with it. Supernatural — “Celebrating the Life of…

I’ve discovered the work of Charles Bukowsi in the last few years. I’m learning he was controversial and considered offensive by some. I haven’t delved that deeply yet to find what all of the critics see, but I really like his quotes and the poems I have read. Not ashamed to say I first heard of him through the movie Beautiful Creatures. One of the main characters wants to be a writer and is fascinated by his work. The name Bukowski stuck in my head. In 1986 Time called Bukowski a “laureate of American lowlife”. Source: PoemHunter.com Regarding Bukowski’s enduring popular appeal, Adam Kirsch of The New Yorker wrote, “the secret of Bukowski’s appeal. . . [is that] he combines the confessional poet’s promise of intimacy with the larger-than-life aplomb of a pulp-fiction hero.” Source: PoemHunter.com I discovered this poem this morning and had to post it. “So you want…

We just wrapped watching the Umbrella Academy. Very sad to finish its 10 episodes, but it’s Netflix and you only get so many at a time. More fun than the first season. It’s a complex, time-bending story that forced us to rewind, pause, and discuss scenes quite frequently. Phones were used during the pauses for research. All of it was enjoyable and fun to process. What’s the show about? Here’s a primer on season1: Photo Credit: Forbes.com In 1989, 43 children were born with superpowers, seven of which were adopted by a mysterious and unyielding billionaire named Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore). Raised by the strict and abusive Reginald and a kind caretaking robot named Grace (Jordan Robbins) and a dapper walking, talking primate named Pogo, the seven Hargreaves children are forged into a dysfunctional superhero team called The Umbrella Academy. Rather than call them by their names, Reginald assigned them numbers…

We’re starting our Halloween hunt this summer! You can bet items hit Homegoods and Michaels in late July. Spirit of Halloween is open here in Atlanta. We nipped into our local At Home store last week and found the following delightful things. The dragon eye lights are pretty cool. We’ll be opening up our blog’s Halloween page soon. If you were around last year, you would’ve seen our continual posting of all local events. Yes, there’s a pandemic, but that doesn’t mean events won’t happen. Most are pivoting to online so we’ll post those links and dates. Enjoy the video and forgive my skills! https://youtu.be/8bMzslFFYak

One of my favorite poets is Emily Dickinson. She was born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst Massachusetts. She wrote 1,800 poems in her lifetime that we know of for certain. I vividly remember sitting in class as a junior in high school and having to analyze her poem “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” and it made a lasting impact on me. For a woman who lived in only one place, and had little outside social discourse later in life, she had an extraordinary grasp on the natural and spiritual worlds. We can only piece together what we’ve found for certain to know what her life was like. A fascinating character who lived and died within the 19th century and whose poetry made intangible things into the tangible. Who was influenced by Wordsworth and Emerson yet wrote in her own unique voice. Photo Credit: Britannica.com Because I could…

#SaveHalloweenMaskUp The count down to Halloween is ramping up. Today it is 90 days away! We are BIG on Halloween at Poe in Wonderland, and we will be adding a page dedicated to it in September. The coronavirus has defintely changed how events will be handled, however we know people are creative and things are moving forward. A good example is Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery’s annual Capturing the Spirit of Halloween tours plans. Groups will be much smaller and guest will be required to social distance and wear masks. We’ve taken the tour 6 times with one year missing. It is a fun one to consider if you are in the city. How many chances does one get to tour a centuries old cemetery at night? Tickets are on sale to foundation members only but open to the public in August. Check their site to find ticket availability: https://youtu.be/kxLti1An00A Video Credit:…

Storiarts scrolled across our feed one day and caught our interest. Their photographs display works of literature turned into everyday items. As avid book readers, this is a win-win! Big fans of wearing what we like as shirts. and can you imagine quotes from Jane Austen, Poe, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Shelley, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Maya Angelou? One of the main things that also impressed us about the company is their devotion to literature. They work with an organization – LitWorld – to spread the love of reading and writing to children. Part of every purchase is donated to LitWorld. “LitWorld is a non-profit organization dedicated to on-the-ground innovative solutions to tackling illiteracy worldwide. Based in 28 countries, LitWorld created three programs that stand today as the organization’s core models: LitClubs, LitCamps, and World Read Aloud Day. Storiarts shares their vision to strengthen children and communities through the power of their own stories…

On a bright, sunny day in July, a long reigning queen and an 100 year old gentleman met for a very happy occasion. Captain Tom Moore, a 100 year old WWII veteran, is a true inspiration to the world. He pledged to walk 100 laps around his garden to raise 1,000 BP for the National Health Service (NHS) with expenses as the coranavirus raged across the United Kingdom. He ended up raising more than 32,000,000 BP which translates to $40 M+ in American dollars. A remarkable and dedicated feat for a man and his walker to do. We wrote about his efforts in an earlier post because his story brought us such joy. “I am absolutely overawed,” he said, “This is such a high award and to get it from Her Majesty as well – what more can anyone wish for? This has been an absolutely magnificent day for me.”…
