It’s that wonderful time of year when there’s a crispness in the air and all the ghoulies come out to celebrate Halloween. Here in Atlanta there are two fun parades that will put you in the holiday spirit. The Decatur Haints and Saints parade and the Little 5 Points Halloween Festival and parade. The Placita Latina Day of the Dead/Haints and Saints Parade will be on Sunday, October 30th, in downtown Decatur. They will start at the Bell Street entrance of the Decatur Cemetery and wind their way through the streets to the courthouse. It’s a tradition that started with one man. “Decatur is rich with parade history beginning way back in 1899 with Maury Mable. Ole’ Maury donned his black silk top hat and paraded down Ponce de Leon Ave annually for 51 years. Sometimes the parades were huge; sometimes they were just him! Rolling holiday parades have been scarce…

We’ve been musing about this topic for a while – how the internet has changed our lives – and thought we’d talk it over. I mean what was life like before the internet? There are several generations of people walking around that have never been without it. Can you imagine? They’ve never had to break out an encyclopedia or use microfiche in a library. Yep, we’re showing our age! So, let’s examine the ways it has influenced us. Photo credit: Andrew Neel on Unsplash Research and NewsRarely do you see people reading an actual newspaper these days. We don’t watch news on tv either but get it off the web. It’s so easy to pull up an article or scroll through the headlines. And you can get news from numerous sources, so if you don’t feel you’re getting the full story, then you can pull a topic up and read it from…

Time to add a little poetry to your day. This one is from Poe’s Tamerlane collection. The photograph is one I took years ago at the Circular Church in Charleston, South Carolina. If you ever get the chance to visit Charleston, this graveyard is a must to see. It’s right in the middle of the city and was founded in 1681. That’s part of the charm of Charleston – you can walk down a busy street and see graveyards everywhere. Now, on to our poem. Visit of the Deadby Edgar Allan Poe Thy soul shall find itself alone — Alone of all on earth — unknown The cause — but none are near to pry Into thine hour of secrecy.Be silent in that solitude,Which is not loneliness — for thenThe spirits of the dead, who stoodIn life before thee, are againIn death around thee, and their willShall then o’ershadow thee — be still:For the night,…

We all need motivation in our lives to keep us moving forward. Words are powerful motivators and we found quotes from authors, scientists, politicians, and more to stir our emotions. Here are 23 quotes that we hope you’ll like and remember. “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” — Herman Melville “We cannot solve problems with the kind of thinking we employed when we came up with them.” — Albert Einstein “Stay away from those people who try to disparage your ambitions. Small minds will always do that, but great minds will give you a feeling that you can become great too.” — Mark Twain “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love…

If you watched a popular show in the ’80’s called Cheers, then you have a good idea what a place is like to hang out where people know your name. The Corner Cup coffeehouse in Decatur and Tucker, Georgia is just such a place. Opened in 2016 and 2018 respectively, Rich Lavery and Michael Vorndran wanted somewhere patrons could not only get a great cup of coffee but feel they were part of the community at large. We like to stop by and get something to drink and eat and work or visit with friends. And, you frequently see people you know doing the same. Recently, we had the chance to sit down with Michael and talk about the Corner Cup and what it means to be a part of the local community. The first thing you notice upon entering their locations is the art displayed on the walls. They…

Looking for a podcast? There are so many out there these days so it’s always good to get recommendations. We found 6 to tell you about – 4 from friends and 2 we listen to regularly. Before we start with the programs, what is a podcast? Simply put, a podcast is an audio program, just like Talk Radio, but you subscribe to it on your smartphone and listen to it whenever you like. In a little more detail, a podcast is a series of spoken word, audio episodes, all focused on a particular topic or theme, like cycling or startups. You can subscribe to the show with an app on your phone and listen to episodes whenever you like on your headphones, in the car or through speakers.Source: What is a Podcast by thepodcasthost.com Now that we’ve got the definition out of the way, let’s jump into them. We recently traveled to Gulf Shores, Alabama, and had a good visit. Let’s talk about what we did and give you a few reviews of places to go. We stayed at the Lighthouse Condominiums which I highly recommend. It was our third time staying there. It’s located right on the beach and has big spacious living areas along with nice-sized bedrooms and full kitchens. You can step out on any balcony and see the beach. It also offers 2 large pools and 2 hot tubs. One of the pools has a zero-entry side for the little ones in your family. We booked our stay through VRBO and it couldn’t have been easier. The weather was beautiful during our stay and never rained. The gulf was calm with enough waves to make body surfing fun. The condominium pools were busy but not so much that you couldn’t enjoy yourself and the…

If you’re a fan of the show Supernatural, then you know the cast and crew like to raise money for good causes. Supernatural’s stars regularly use show logos and characters in STANDS merchandise to support non-profits and communities. In the past, they’ve raised money for hunger, hurricane relief, pandemic support, and suicide awareness. This month they are selling Pride merchandise to raise money for OutYouth. This is the LAST week to purchase items so we hope you support them. The mission for OutYouth is the following: “Out Youth serves Central Texas LGBTQIA+ (lesbian/gay/bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning, intersex, and asexual) youth and their allies with programs and services to ensure these promising young people develop into happy, healthy, successful adults. Founded in 1990, Out Youth has grown and changed over the years, but we’ve always retained our most important facet – providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth to come together, receive support,…
