The Downton Abbey exhibition in Atlanta is currently showing and will be until the beginning of January 2022. My mom and I recently went on a mother-daughter date and toured the exhibition. We didn’t know what to expect. We were joyfully surprised at the authenticity and extent of the show. Downton Abbey for those that don’t know is the most successful PBS series ever. It follows the Crawley family in their daily life on a grand estate in England and covers the time from 1912 to 1927. Starts with the sinking of the Titanic and travels through World War I and early modern times. It’s an epic drama and many of my friends and family have been enthralled with it for years. I’m going to walk you through the exhibit with pictures, and then my mom’s review will be at the end. Don’t worry, I’m not giving everything away about…

Oakland Cemetery’s Sunday in the Park is returning this Sunday, September 26th, for its 43rd year. Every fall, the Historic Oakland Foundation has hosted this annual Victorian festival. It’s built on a tradition of people visiting their dead when they would picnic next to the graves and bring refreshments or sit on the lawns and enjoy the green space. Sunday in the Park is one of many events Oakland hosts throughout the year. This year the event will also feature their music festival Tunes from the Tomb. It’s an outdoor experience not to be missed in Atlanta! Headlining this year’s Tunes from the Tombs music festival are The Original Wailers and Jupiter Coyote. You’ll also enjoy pop-up performances throughout the day. In my second of three posts about Reverend Howard Finster I’ll talk about his work and show what I photographed on my visit to his museum and gallery. The first post was about the cozy Air BnB I stayed in across the street from his museum and garden in Summerville, Georgia. Our timing for writing about this artist is the upcoming festival know as “Finster Fest” that will be held in a few weeks. Howard Finster was a self-taught or outsider artist. Outsider artists are typically those that have no art training and exist outside the mainstream art world. Fantasy, unconventional ideas, and at times extreme mental stress can be found in their art. In his case, he started with an outsider’s viewpoint and moved into sacred art later in life. Self-portrait Paradise Garden Museum Finster was born in rural Alabama in 1961. At the age of 3, he saw…

The Capturing the Spirit of Oakland tour held at Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery is back for its 15th year and will be held in person. The tour is one of the most popular events held in Atlanta in October. The spirits of the residents appear on their burial plots to tell you their stories and the history of Georgia during their time on earth. More historical than frightening, it’s an amazing annual opportunity to stroll through the cemetery in the dark with paths lit only by lantern carrying docents and the residents’ plots. The docents and performers are all dressed in period costumes which adds atmosphere to the evening. At night, the backlit city of Atlanta is beautiful to see as you stand among the living and the dead. This will be the 7th time we’ve participated in the tour! In a normal year, we’d drive down into the city and…
Travel is a passion and one we would love to indulge in more. Currently, we are staying home with all of our school and work, but we long for the open road. I, for one, cannot wait until we can travel again in early fall. Thinking about the wildness of nature we thought of the American essayist, poet, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau. His quotes on nature resonate with us. “Life consists with wildness. The most alive is the wildest. Not yet subdued to man, its presence refreshes him. One who pressed forward incessantly and never rested from his labors, who grew fast and made infinite demands on life, would always find himself in a new country or wilderness, and surrounded by the raw material of life. He would be climbing over the prostrate stems of primitive forest trees.” “I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom…

Atlanta, GeorgianThe Georgian Terrace HotelOne of our favorite places to stay in Georgia. This modern classic hotel was built in 1911, and stands on a famous corner in Atlanta on Peachtree Street. Located across from the Fox Theatre, it’s seen a great deal of history in Midtown. A luxury hotel that regularly hosts weddings and important public events where you can stay in a fabulous suite with city views. They even allow for dogs and what luxury hotel does this? We try to stay at least once a year, especially at Christmas with its beautifully decorated lobby.
