But…how do you make Easter Halloweeny?

Halloween Easter eggs.

I always loved dying Easter eggs growing up. I’m a May baby, so the pastel hues of spring have always appealed to me. But this year, I found myself wanting Halloween colors…and done in a fun, unexpected way.

I think I achieved that because these aren’t any old Halloween Easter eggs, my spooky friends. These are marbled Halloween Easter eggs!

And today I’ll show you how to make them for less than $10.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 can of shaving cream (or whipped topping)
  • Halloweeny food coloring (I used purple, orange and lime green)
  • A shallow dish, such as a pie tin
  • Spatula
  • Knife, wooden skewer or another thin item to create marbling pattern
  • Aluminum foil (could also use parchment or wax paper – do not use paper towels)

COST:

This pricing does not include the basket, but I was able to make this DIY for about $7.14, which includes the cost of the eggs (18, but I only used 12 for the DIY), shaving cream and food coloring. All other items are ones I assume you have at home already.

The basket was made for an additional $4 and used ribbon I already had at home.

HOW TO MAKE MARBLED HALLOWEEN EASTER EGGS:

STEP 1:

Boil your eggs ahead of time. My preferred method is to place my eggs in a pot with approximately 1 inch of water over the top of the eggs. Add 1 Tablespoon of vinegar. Bring water to rolling boil, then turn off the burner, cover pot and let stand for 10 minutes.

When 10 minutes is up, move eggs to an ice bath in a separate bowl, and let stand for 15-20 minutes. Dry and store in the fridge until you’re ready to do this project.

STEP 2:

Apply an even layer of shaving cream to your shallow pan or dish.

Then spread evenly with a spatula – you want to start with as smooth a surface as possible.

STEP 3:

Apply dots of food coloring to the surface of the shaving cream. Since I was using gel food coloring (the only kind I could find in the colors I wanted), I used larger dots because I found it was harder to spread through the shaving cream in small amounts.

If you’re using liquid food coloring, you may want to use several smaller dots as the liquid will spread more easily.

Then take your knife, or another thin object, and carefully drag it through the food coloring dots to create a marble effect. Be sure to move the object around in random patterns to get the best marbling effect!

STEP 4:

Place an egg into mixture, then gently coat in shaving cream and food coloring mixture.

Be sure to move it in random directions to get the best marbling pattern possible.

Continue with all colors you want to use.

And know the longer you let the food coloring sit in shaving cream, the more the color spreads and the less of a marble pattern you will have. (See: the purple mixture.)

STEP 5:

Remove eggs from the dish and set on aluminum foil. Allow eggs to dry for 20-30 minutes. You’ll want to use something non-porous for this so the color doesn’t absorb into the surface. I had foil on hand, but parchment paper or wax paper would work well too.

STEP 6:

Shaving cream will not be dried after 20-30 minutes, but this gives the color a chance to absorb into the eggshell. When drying time is up, rinse eggs under a gentle stream of water.

STEP 7:

Pat dry with a paper towel. Then store in egg crate until ready to use…and they should look something like this:

Aren’t they pretty?

I kind of love how they all look like swirling Halloween planets…a place where October 31st really is every day.

If you’re like me, you can go the extra mile and make yourself a Halloweeny Easter basket for your eggs:

I picked up the green basket from Target for $1. The black crinkle paper is from Party City, and the witch ribbon was gifted to me by my lovely friend Samantha. (She is always mailing me Halloween treats.)

And that’s how I made Halloween Easter eggs this year!
